This is how Half Life Crisis started!  My daughter showed affinity for the arts, and this became HER main platform to proudly showcase HER artwork!

Original artwork by Sammy BeeZee.

Today, October 18, 2020, Sammy was assigned a school project which consisted of collecting leaves, soaking them in watercolor, and seeing the structures of the leaves.  Sammy and I went on a trip around the backyard to gather all of the leaves that she wanted.  We got all kinds of leaves, from big ones to very small ones, and it turned out that she only wanted one of each.  She loved the experience, though.  I had some watercolors that Sammy didn’t much care for until that day, laying around the house, and a few old paint brushes.  The only thing I had resembling a canvas was an old poster board that had been tucked in to our attic since goodness-knows-when but I figured it would be a good choice for watercolor.

As soon as we started on the project on the covered porch on our backyard, I realized Sammy had discovered her new passion.  Her eyes lit up and she was so focused.  She loved every second and, somehow, she brought that old neglected piece of poster board to life.

My New Passion | Sammy’s First Art Collection, October 2020.

A collection of three 15 1/2″ x 19 1/2″ (canvas) – 22″ x 26″ (frame), 9 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ (canvas) –  14 3/4″‘ x 11 3/4″ (frame), and 9 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ (canvas) –  14 3/4″‘ x 11 3/4″ (frame) pictures, which were part of the same larger canvas.  These are Sammy’s very first free-hand attempt at watercolor and signed work.  Due to the “canvas” type of material, and Sammy’s intrinsic technique, the pictures actually project a unique texture.  The main portion with the leaves was placed in the larger picture frame, while some of the other abstract pictures were divided into two different-sized smaller pieces and framed, accordingly.  The choice of brushes and colors were all hers.  For her birthday and Christmas, Sammy chose the actual paint supplies that she used for her second collection, “My Visions of Home.”  All pictures in this collection now adorn her bedroom, which is one of her favorite hang-out areas at home.

Color Leaves

Size: 15 1/2″ x 19 1/2″ (canvas) – 22″ x 26″ (frame)

Inspiration:  This is Sammy’s very first signed watercolor project.  I framed the larger portion of the canvas in order to focus on the larger leaves that Sammy placed on the canvas.  I felt that a white border encased on a black frame provided the proper focus on the chosen color palette.  Sammy was very focused on the entire project and she actually got snappy when I was trying to “guide her” along the way.  I guess you cannot argue with an artist’s vision.

Small Color Drops

Size: 9 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ (canvas) –  14 3/4″‘ x 11 3/4″ (frame)

Inspiration:  The second part of Sammy’s very first signed watercolor project.  This particular portion was originally the “color test” area in her canvas.  As she completed the rest of the picture, she returned to this part and blended the colors.  For that reason, I cropped the left portion of the picture where the style and color pallet is consistent, yet becomes more abstract than the larger picture.  I realized that the white border helped enhance the picture and enables it to become a stand-alone piece of art.

Color Little Drops

Picture #2 of 3 in “My New Passion” Collection
Size: 6 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (canvas) –  12 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ (frame)

Inspiration:  The third part of Sammy’s very first signed watercolor project.  The smallest piece left from the original canvas found it’s way to it’s own small-sized frame.  As it was the case with the previous pieces, I chose the portion of the picture that gives the best focus to be a stand-alone picture.  This decision was made before I originally cropped the original piece.  Originally, these color “drops” were part of her “color test” area of the canvas.
