The 2025 government shutdown

This fiscal year there was no clean continuing resolution.  Both sides blame each other — but this was preventable.  Let’s break down the mechanics and sabotage.

Blame the Congressional Ineptitude

This is not just a Republican shutdown or a Democratic failure — it’s a bipartisan collapse of duty.  Whether through ineptitude or partisanship, both sides share responsibility.  The U.S. fiscal year begins every October.  That’s not new.

What’s new is the normalization of brinkmanship.  Despite MAGA control of the House, Senate, executive branch, and a majority-aligned Supreme Court, the consequences belong to everyone in power.  Legislators, stop pointing fingers.  Start governing.  The oath of office isn’t a partisan accessory — it’s your constitutional obligation.

Where We’re Stuck — and Why It Matters

At town halls across the country, legislators are warning that this shutdown could last an entire year.  The country won’t survive that.  So it’s critical to understand where — and why — we’re stuck.

Republicans are advancing a contradictory narrative:

  1. The shutdown exists because Democrats won’t pass a so-called “clean CR” (continuing resolution), and
  2. The CR includes funding for so-called “illegal immigrants” to receive benefits — including healthcare—not available to Americans.

This is a non-sequitur.  Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federal social program assistance.  Period.

Here’s the link to the CR — read it.  Flip to the page where this alleged funding appears.  You won’t find it, because it isn’t there.

Here’s the official link to the CR and a breakdown of the key Democratic objections.
These are the provisions they argue would harm millions of Americans if enacted.

Full Text of the CR
Title: Continuing Appropriations and Extensions and Other Matters Act, 2026 (S.2882)

As you can read it in black and white — this wasn’t a clean CR.  The GOP inserted provisions that will cause generational harm — whether or not they’ve realized the long-term consequences.  One of the most devastating impacts: the expiration of subsidized healthcare premiums.  If this CR passes, millions of Americans will face doubled or tripled insurance costs.  Many will be forced to choose between coverage and survival.

The cost of preserving those subsidies?  $35 billion a year.  Keep that number in mind.

Below is the full list of harms Democrats identified in this CR — each one a direct hit to working families, veterans, and the coalition we’re trying to protect.

  • Healthcare Subsidy Cuts: The CR would allow enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies to expire, raising premiums for millions of Americans. Too many could see their costs double or triple.
  • Medicaid Rollbacks: Provisions would reverse Medicaid expansions, potentially removing coverage for up to 15 million people.
  • SNAP and Food Assistance Cuts: The bill proposes reductions in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding, disproportionately affecting low-income families and children.
  • Education and Childcare Cuts: Funding reductions for Head Start and early childhood education programs would impact working families and single parents.
  • Veterans’ Services Delays: Delayed or reduced funding for VA services could disrupt healthcare and benefits for veterans.
  • Climate and Clean Energy Rollbacks: The CR includes language that would block implementation of clean energy tax credits and environmental protections passed in previous legislation.
  • No Funding for Alleged “Illegal Immigrant Benefits”: Despite GOP claims, there is no line item in the CR that allocates benefits or healthcare to undocumented immigrants. This narrative has been fact-checked and debunked – yet is the line most right-leaning people believe.  That is why I asked to read the bill.

$40 Billion for Argentina — While Americans Go Without

I asked you to keep that $35 billion in mind.  This is why.

In October 2025, the Trump administration pledged $40 billion to Argentina to rescue their collapsing economy — while President Javier Milei runs for reelection.  Yes, the same Milei who gifted Elon Musk a chainsaw during the DOGE frenzy, while pushing an economic plan for us to emulate - now being bailed out with U.S. taxpayer funds.

Let that sink in: $40 billion sent abroad — $5 billion more than what’s needed to subsidize healthcare for Americans and reopen the government.

Meanwhile, our own citizens are suffering.  Livelihoods are being destroyed.  Families are choosing between insurance and survival.  And the shutdown continues.

Here’s the timeline of funding Argentina:

  • Early October 2025: $20 billion pledged via a currency swap line between the U.S. Treasury and Argentina’s central bank.
  • October 15, 2025: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announces a second $20 billion facility, backed by private lenders and sovereign wealth funds.
  • October 21, 2025: The Trump administration unveils the full $40 billion package — one of the largest U.S. financial interventions in a foreign economy.

This isn’t just aid — it’s a gamble.  Argentina’s economic plan failed.  And now we’re footing the bill.

Let’s be clear: Trump voters are suffering too.  The shutdown doesn’t discriminate.  In fact, the majority of those impacted live in red states and districts.

Speak Up and Let’s Fix This

Congressional dereliction and ineptitude are evident across multiple failed lines of effort.  It’s up to we the people to keep the pulse and set the record straight.

I can’t help but ask: how have congressional staffs — on both sides — failed to articulate what’s laid out in this article?  Even my own legislator, a Democrat, insists we’re stuck solely because Republicans hold the majority.

He’s wrong.

We’re here because failing to plan is planning to fail.  You don’t win with partisan votes — you win by controlling the narrative.  Articulate with facts.  No finger-pointing.  Frame the cost and impact.  Leave the theater behind and work as a coalition.

The Democratic Party performs like solo acts instead of an orchestra.  The GOP — though dysfunctional — moves in alignment.  And that’s a low bar, considering the blind spots I’ve already exposed in their so-called “clean CR.”

Understanding how Congress works is a civic duty.  Here’s a lesson relevant right now:  The Senate must vote to approve the CR and reopen the government.  If they don’t, it goes back to the House for modification.  But Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly sent legislators home instead of keeping them in Washington to debate the resolution.

House recess timeline:  October 1–21, 2025: Johnson kept the House out of session for at least three consecutive weeks.

So ask yourself: how does sending legislators on paid vacation while the government is shut down make sense?  That’s not a trick question.  If you justify it with a partisan lens, you’re not being objective.

And Democrats aren’t off the hook.  The fiscal year starts every October.  We knew MAGA-GOP controlled the government.  Solutions had to be proactive —not reactive — while millions of Americans suffer.

This is the shutdown cost to the U.S. economy:

  • Estimated daily impact: $350 million to $1.05 billion per day

  • CBO projection: Up to $14 billion total if the shutdown lasts eight weeks. Remember there is no end in sight.

Bottom line: This was preventable.  But now that we’re here, we must stay vigilant, speak truth to power, and document the facts.  HLC
